RIP Jim Marshall

There is little more I can add to the tributes being paid to the Legend of Loud, Jim Marshall who died this morning aged 88. Since picking up a guitar at the age of 11 I wanted a Marshall amp, after hording the money I made from a paper round over two years I finally got my chance with the purchase of my first proper ‘big amp’, a Valvestate VS100. Tapestry of a Natural Woman ~ or ~ Happy 70th Birthday Carole King

Today (February 9th) marks Carole King’s birthday, she’s the big Seven-O, which is the new sixty, I hear. ‘Tapestry’, her first top 10 album that will be celebrating its own 40th birthday tomorrow (Feb 10th) is considered one of the definitive albums of the early 70s and in 1972 it received four Grammys including Album of the Year.

Today (January 24th) is Warren William Zevon’s birthday, he would have been 65 had this ‘Excitable Boy’ not shuffled off this mortal coil aged 56 in 2003.  My first and for years only experience of Warren Zevon was the near-novelty ‘Werewolves of London’ but after a conversation with a rock journalist I started to probe deeper. Thermonuclear Apocalypse ~ or ~ Why we’re not out of the radioactive water yet

Since I can remember I’ve had recurring dreams about the “Dying Day”. As soon as I could talk I would give detail descriptions about my nightly escapades in this hellish scene to my worried Mum who no doubt wondered if she had given birth the reincarnation of Nostradamus or even possibly the Anti-Christ. These apocalyptic dreams would come and go in bouts throughout my childhood leaving me a bit obsessed with the Cold War and post-apocalyptic sci-fi themes. This could also explain why I became so enthralled in the thrashing guitars and doom-mongering lyrics of Megadeth but this post isn’t about psycho-analysing my childhood it’s actually my argument as to why we should still be wary of nuclear war.
