Featured on 6 Music

How would you like to listen to Featured on 6 Music?

Have you ever worked on something for so long but never quite nailed it? Well, if truth be told, that’s how I’ve felt about producing my own music. Well, I don’t feel that way anymore. I don’t know why, but something just clicked with this song.

Initially, I started writing this song as a bit of an exercise in forcing myself out of my comfort zone. I wanted to try something different. I never expected it to come as easily as it did, the music and lyrics just flowed from me. Mixing it was a breeze too and I have to say that it’s my best mix to date. As I said, something just clicked!

I wrote the song as a tirade against the desire for instant fame and the willingness to sacrifice yourself in pursuit of it. The music business has been gamified. Life has been gamified. Life is short and it’s causing us to live like mayflies, caught in a digital landslide, escaping from reality as our lives pass us by. I for one am sick of being a slave to my screen.

If you enjoyed this song, please find me on socials and say hello! I love hearing from you and building a community around Fringe Rock music.

LYRICS:

They say sharing is caring
They say the system is broke
They don’t care what you’re airing
They just care that it’s woke
They don’t want what you’re dealing
They don’t care if it’s fresh
They don’t want what you’re feeling
They just want your flesh
Just want your flesh

They don’t care where you come from
They don’t care who you are
They don’t care if you’re spending
All day in a spar
Treat people like people
Not like cogs in the clock
We’re all climbing the same hill
But I just wanna rock

This won’t be featured on 6 Music
No

Nah, nah, nah, nah
Nah, nah, nah
Nah, nah, nah

I say sharing is caring
I say the system is broke
I don’t care what you’re airing
I don’t care if it’s woke
I don’t want what you’re dealing
I don’t care if it’s flash
I don’t want what you’re feeling
I just wanna thrash

They gamified music
And they gamified life
SubmitHub and TikTok
Live like a mayfly
This isn’t a real life
It’s all fantasy
In a digital landslide
Escape reality

A New Year, A Thank You and Some Fresh New Things

First of all, I’d like to welcome those of you who have come aboard over the past few months. I’m not brilliant at social media and I’ve probably been a little slack in welcoming you. So, thank you for taking the time to follow what I do.

In all honesty, I have a love/hate relationship with social channels. It’s easy to get hooked into doomscrolling and find yourself three hours later sat in the same position having accomplished little except for ‘liking’ a hundred different memes. I struggle to bite my lip with threads that are just there to sow discourse. You know the sort, echo chambers for people unwilling to think for themselves, on both sides of whatever the debate is.

So for those reasons, I tend to avoid social media as much as possible. I know it can be an incredible tool to better connect with people though. So, I will do better this year. I’ll try to not get trapped in endless scrolling and instead invest my time actually connecting with people that I want to connect with, people like you!

So if you haven’t already, stop by my socials and say hello. I’m more active on Instagram than anything else but I do check in on Facebook and even TikTok every now and then. I will note that my Twitter feed is pretty dead though. It’s not the place it once was and it’s not for me right now. I was getting far too political and while I’m in the camp that believes politics and music can and should mix, I was using Twitter to vent and I’d rather put that energy into creating punchier songs.

Talking of punchier songs, I’ve got more coming. In fact, my first new song of 2023 drops everywhere in less than two weeks, on Friday 13th January. It’s called Badass Motherfucka and is all about the life of a failed Rock Star wannabe (hmm, sounds familiar, could be this autobiographical in any way)? If you can’t wait until then, you can always stop by my Bandcamp page and pre-order the single. As a thank you, the B-Side “Hustle for Gas” will be available for immediate download. I’ll drop another message when Badass Motherfucka comes out asking you to take a listen and let me know what you think.

Musically, I’m shifting gears throughout 2023. I’m being more daring with what I’m going to be releasing and it feels good. The reason I create music is that it’s an incredibly cathartic experience and it also happens to be a lot cheaper than therapy. My songs, no matter how bizarre the lyrics, come from a deeply personal place. I’m learning to let the music flow the same way and be less conscious of worrying about what people will think.

If you’ve reached the end of this message, thank you so much for your time. If my music resonates with you I’d love for you to stop by and have a chat on my socials. I really want to get to know the people who are consuming my music. So, when you get a moment tap me up on Instagram or Facebook and let me know who you are, where you’re from and how my music connects with you. I’m more than happy to receive comments or direct messages 🙂

Oh, I almost forgot. Happy New Year! I really do hope that things get better for us all this year, we certainly all deserve it.

Finally, a Spotify Playlist for Rock’n’Roll Rebels

It’s Friday. It’s the weekend! It’s time for some brand new music!

The trouble with many playlists on Spotify, including most of Spotify’s own playlists, is there’s never any passion in curating them. That comes across in the final playlist. Sure, Spotify will argue that you’re supposed to listen to them on ‘shuffle’ mode but that’s just laziness. Any decent playlist should be curated in a way that the music flows without anything poking out like a pussy spot on the end of your nose.

It’s really off-putting when you’re listening to a playlist and it’s grooving. You’re enjoying the vibe when suddenly a track pops in there that throws off the groove. It’s jarring and it’s fucking annoying. At least it is for me. That’s why I tend to prefer listening to playlists from people who take what order they place the tracks. Quite often, actually, most of the time that’s from smaller playlisters.

I like to think that when I curate a playlist I do it with the same care and attention. I like my playlists to flow with a certain vibe, whatever grooves with the track that came before. I’ve been that way ever since I was creating my own mixtapes with my Panasonic boom box (yes, I am that old).

And so to the main feature of today’s post. I have curated a brand new playlist that has a pretty rebellious vibe to it. It’s music that sticks it to the mainstream. Music for people like me and if you’re still reading this, music for people like you too.

So, it is my pleasure and privilege to introduce to you my latest Spotify playlist Rebel Rock Rebels! (Yeah ok, the name is rather tongue-in-cheek but you won’t forget it easily). As you’ll see (and hear), I like to sprinkle most of my playlists with a mix of new and established artists because I like to think that it helps to give more context. Have a listen, give it a save, give it a download and then follow all of the artists that you haven’t heard of before. If there’s someone else you think will like this playlist, send them the link. The gift of music is always one of my favourite gifts to receive.

Let me know how this playlist made you feel. Comments are open below but if you’d rather find me on social media here’s where you can find me:

Have an awesome weekend and rock-eth the fuck-eth out-eth!

Let Me In – No, it’s not a song about Boris and the Tory leadership power struggle!

My latest single “Let Me In” drops one week today. With a title like “Let Me In” I have been asked by those who are yet to hear it if it’s a song about Boris Johnson and the Tory leadership? Well, I’m sorry to disappoint anyone but no it’s not. If I could have predicted what would be happening in British politics right now then I’d have put some bets on at the bookies but alas, I am not clairvoyant.

The track is subtly political though as it’s a darkly humorous song that hints at how justice is never fulfilled when you enter into a perpetual cycle of violence (sound familiar)? The lyrics are of a narrative nature that follows a criminal and his search to silence a witness to one of his crimes. With an ominous bassline and deadpan vocals, the verse sets the mood for a chorus filled with a crescendo of craziness as the narrator descends into paranoia.

Roadkill – New Music Friday

Although this week has been quite a quiet one as far as me listening to new music goes, this track certainly ain’t, quiet that is.

I first became aware of the awesome band that is Starcrawler towards the end of last year and I’ve been really enjoying listening to them. When they dropped this track a couple of weeks ago I was there like a shot and was probably one of the first members of Joe Public to hear it. Since then I’ve listened to it several times a day, not least because I’ve added it to my Summer Hot Rocks playlist.

In typical Starcrawler fashion, it’s a gnarly glam rocker with all the grit and dirt that we’ve come to expect from this band. I love the very pink music video which features a cameo from Jackass’s Steve-O.

What have you been listening to lately? Drop me a line with any hot tips!

This Fringe Rock Song Will Have You Dancin’ In Your Speedos! – New Music Friday

New Single, Cookin’ in the Sun – Out Now!

13th May 2022

Cookin’ in the Sun” is available on all major platforms.

Hey! My brand new single, Cookin’ in the Sun is out today! I had so much fun writing, recording and producing this track. In true Fringe Rock, DIY fashion I did everything on this release myself. Everything to do with the music right through to the artwork was done by my own hands.

I even made my directorial debut when making the music video. I mean, technically I suppose every music video I’ve produced was directed by myself but this is the first one where I was directing other people. Speaking of whom, a huge thank you to the great sports that gave up their Bank Holiday Sunday afternoon to be filmed doing crazy things in front of a camera.

So here’s a big shout out to Jason for letting us film in the upstairs function room at Ye Olde Salutation Inn, Nottingham. Of course, I need to acknowledge “the girls” Lisa, Celina and Gemma. Adi and Ali for the shots they took on holiday and Gill for taking some awesome stills.

Here’s the video, which will premiere at 8pm GMT, so if it’s not there yet you can click to set a reminder and be one of the first to see it!

The song is me riffing on a story of how I ended up with major sunburn and a swollen face on my wedding day. It’s also a farcical take on how we Brits are never satisfied with the weather. It’s either too cold, too wet or too hot! There is also a subtle nod to the fact that we’re finally seeing the negative effects of climate change in action. I mean, you’d be a blithering idiot not to recognise what’s going on in the world but I’ve already hit that subject matter pretty hard in the past. Twice in fact; with This Burning Town and Four Horsemen from The Attic Transmission. Songs that I wrote way back in the 00s. Will we ever learn?

Anyway, if you want to hear more about the story behind this song I’ll be going into more detail in a later post. To make sure you never miss a post, enter your email below and subscribe. Posts will be sent direct to your inbox and I’ll never sell off your info or spam you. I hate spam, it’s not effective and it’s very annoying so I’d never do that to you either!

In the meantime why not give the song a listen on your streaming service of choice. If you like it then I’d sure appreciate if you’d save it or even add it to one of your playlists? Maybe even download it FOR FREE on my Bandcamp page, so that you can keep it forever?

Regardless, thank you for supporting independent music and have a great weekend!
