This Is How I Focus My Creativity

Creating Your Own DIY Music Video

This week I have put music creation on hold to concentrate on getting the music video for my new single “Cookin’ in the Sun” edited and ready to launch on 13th May.

I don’t know about you but I find that when creativity hits, it hits big. A flood of ideas wash over you all at once and it’s your job to sort the flotsam and jetsam. You’ve got to try to prioritise, to save the living, breathing creatures with a future and discard the driftwood. For a life-long procrastinator, it’s not easy!

It’s particularly difficult when such waves of inspiration crash over you whilst you’re slap-bang in the middle of another project. A project that requires your immediate attention, because you’ve got a self-imposed deadline to hit. So, what do I do to satisfy my creative mind while maintaining focus on the task at hand (editing the music video)? Well, I simply record the very rough and usually basically hummed idea into the voice recorder on my phone. Once there, it’s like throwing the mess from your bedroom floor into a cupboard to sort later. Your immediate vicinity is now in order but you know that you’ll have to go back and sort out your cupboard later.

Until I found this technique, I found it incredibly difficult to focus. Especially during those days and weeks when the universe was pumping out its sweet creative juices directly into my brain. I would highly recommend any creative struggling with an overflow of ideas to give it a go. Find a way to note down the basic concept that’s found its way to you and you’ll find it’s easier to move on and focus your energy on the most pressing project.

And so to the project I’m talking about. The music video for my new single. If you’re part of my Facebook group then you’ll have seen a sneaky preview of what I’ve been working on. I’m going for a retro, highly colour, high contrast look. Something that pops with colour but also looks old and faded, just like some late 70s/early 80s ice pop commercial!

Anyway, here’s what I’ve got so far:

The final pieces of the puzzle will be put together this week and it’ll be ready to launch when the single drops on 13th May.

If you wanna talk about anything, anything at all, I’d love to hear from you. You can drop me a comment here or find me on once of my social channels:

That’s all for today, have a fantastic week!

Debut Single “Fortitude” Coming Soon!

This whole lockdown thing has been pretty shit for socialising. For us creatives however, it’s actually been quite a good exercise in what you can achieve when you don’t have the distractions of daily chores, you know little things like the day job.

With that in mind I’ve been knocking around with a song I wrote last summer called “Fortitude”. For some reason things just clicked. It might be the current state of the world or possibly my mind but it just sort of fell into place in the home studio this week. I was planning on saving it for a future album but, with the knowledge of how unpredictable life can be at the moment, I have decided to go ahead an self-release it now.

Well, I say “now” but the truth is it will take a week or so before I can get the release date. Yes, even though self-releasing music is something that has been incredibly easy for well over a decade now, I am finally taking the plunge and doing it.

Since leaving Red Star Rebels back in 2007 I have been a big advocate for self-releasing music. The DIY ethic really appeals to me as there’s something raw and honest about it. You’re doing it because you want your art out there in the big wide world, rather than trying to appease accountants in suits. At least that’s been my take on the DIY music release anyway. I have been quite vocal before about my believe that it’s something Red Star Rebels should have done way back when but that’s by-the-by. I haven’t exactly been forthcoming in releasing my solo music before either so, who am I to complain anyway?

I think the real reason I haven’t done anything before is due to lack of confidence. “Think”? I mean I “know”. Putting yourself out there is a scary prospect when you haven’t got other band members to fall back on and take any criticism with you. Not having enough time is another excellent excuse that’s been a favourite of mine. With a day job and my other creative hobby of making videos about motorcycling taking up precious free time it was easy to justify my lack of musical output.

Being furloughed from work because of COVID-19 has been a double-edged sword. On one side my income is drastically reduced, social plans have become non-existent and I haven’t been able to ride my fucking motorcycle! That’s not even counting the tragic personal losses that are happening daily and the huge global financial repercussions.

But no matter how bad the world gets I do always at least try to see some good in everything. The most obvious benefit for me personally is that I have had no excuse not to make a return to music. And return I have!

I’ve finally come to throw caution to the wind and say “fuck it”. Yes, self-releasing my own music could be considered a vanity project and yes, it probably is. But if you don’t believe in your own creations then why would anyone else?

And so, after that rather long winded and excuse-ridden prologue, I would like to announce that my debut solo single “Fortitude” will be officially released on all major streaming and download services very soon. As soon as I have a going live date I’ll be promoting the fuck out of it, so apologies now if you get rather sick of me in the coming weeks!

For now though, here’s the artwork for the single. Thanks for reading this and stay safe folks!Fortitude Single Cover Idea 03

New Site!

Well, I thought it was about time to start a website and here it is. The old blog just wasn’t quite up to scratch and a move to WordPress has been on the cards for a while.

You’ll also notice that I’ve changed my name back to Dazzle Rebel! Well if you hadn’t noticed I’d put my whole solo music projects on hold when I joined New Generation Superstars. When I joined New Gen, they asked me why I wasn’t working under the Dazzle Rebel stage name anymore. I didn’t really have a good answer so I decided to bring Dazzle Rebel back! Daz Vibrafly didn’t really sit well with me anyway and I suppose I just wanted to distance myself from my time in Red Star Rebels.

Anyway, I am Dazzle Rebel and I’m back!

In the words of The Carpenters it’s “only just begun” but check back soon because there will be much more content over the coming weeks.

Acoustic EP Out Now!

Greetings folks! It might have been quiet here for a while but I’ve been very busy behind the scenes. I’m just not very good at keeping everyone posted on what I’m doing!

Anyway, I am very excited to announce that I’ve just put a brand new acoustic EP called “Smoke on the Horizon” on MySpace. However, you’ll notice that I’ve changed my name “Daz Vibrafly”! The reason for this is simple, Dazzle Rebel as a stage name came from my time in Red Star Rebels and now that I’ve left the band I think it’s time I changed my stage name.

Vibrafly was a name I came up with in the late 90s for the music project I was working on at the time and I’ve always wanted to revisit it at some point. Why not now?

Anyway, back to the music!

The four-track EP is currently up on my brand new MySpace page and consists of four tracks:

  • Real World (acoustic version)
  • The Devil Came Down to Mexico
  • Insomnia (acoustic version)
  • Real World (alternative acoustic version)

I recorded the tracks in the bedroom in my flat and I have to say, it’s about damn time I upgraded my computer! The old Logic Audio isn’t running the best and kept crashing. Recording these tracks was a task and a half, I tell thee!

So, if you have any suggestions on a decent modern (but well-priced) computer for making music, please let me know!
