The 2016 Indian Motorcycle Springfield is Here!

It’s what many Indian Motorcycle riders have been waiting for; a hard-bagger with the practicality of the Chieftain but with the styling of the Vintage. And now, it is here, the Indian Springfield. Being based on the Chieftain/Roadmaster chassis with its narrower 25° (opposed to 29° for other Chief models) rake and tour-biased set up it’s more like a ‘naked’ Chieftain than Vintage with hard luggage – and I think that’s a good thing!

Priced from £19,599 in the UK it’s actually £400 cheaper than the slightly more ‘bling’ Vintage, which is priced from £19,999. It’s perfect for those who want the practicality of the Chieftain but also want the classic looks sans-batwing fairing. Unlike the Chief Classic, Vintage and Dark Horse, the Springfield will be compatible with Indian’s trunk/top box which is currently an option on the Chieftain and comes as standard on the Roadmaster. This will open up the Springfield as a genuine tourer giving 64 litres of luggage capacity and the ability to carry up to 242kg (533lbs) for, as Indian say; “those trips that have an endless horizon”.

Another handy feature included is a tyre-pressure monitoring system, previously only available on the Roadmaster & Cheiftain. The bike can also go from modern/classic tourer to street cruiser in a matter on minutes with quick-release (with remote central locking) panniers, windshield and rear pillion seat.

It should also be possible to turn the Springfield into something closely resembling the Classic in very little time, though colour options at time of press are limited to Indian Red and Thunder Black.

With the Springfield combining the classic looks with Chieftain-ness practicality I for one am looking forward to taking one for a ride!
